NATGAS: EU Considering Delaying Proposal To Extend Gas Storage Targets By 1 Mth

NATGAS

EU is considering delaying a proposal to extend gas-storage targets by around a month that was expected to be presented Wednesday, Bloomberg reports.

  • Reason for postponement is not immediately clear.
  • Plan is to extend a requirement for a gas-storage target for 2026 and 2027, Bloomberg reports. The EC has been seeking to extend the 90% November storage goal that expires at the end of 2025 into 2026 and 2027.
  • Possible alternative date is April 9 but the commission hasn’t made a final decision yet.
  • European nations have been pushing the EU to relax gas storage targets. Germany has previously requested to be exempt from its target for 2025, while at least six countries were in support of relaxing this year’s target.
  • The EC has made it clear that it would like to leave the 2025 storage targets unchanged. Reports last week suggested the EC would signal a more ‘flexible’ approach to the pace for refilling gas storage targets this year while still maintaining its final target of 90%.
