EU Gas, Coal Output For Power Generation To Fall 20% This Year

European fossil-fuel demand for electricity generation is estimated to fall by 20% on the year amid expectations of lower power demand, higher nuclear output and a rising share of renewables output according to the EMBER European Electricity Review 2023.

  • Gas and coal output is expected to fall by 20%, or 211TWh, with the largest share attributed to gas-fired output since forward prices suggest gas plants will remain more expensive than coal until at least 2025.
  • Electricity demand in the region is expected to fall by 84TWh, or 3%, on the year.
