EU Gas Demand in 2023 at Lowest Since 1995

NATURAL GAS

European gas demand in 2023 fell to the lowest levels since 1995 with a decline by over 100bcm in 2022 and 2023 according to IEA analyst Greg Molnar.

  • European gas consumption fell by 7% (or 35 bcm) in 2023 following a 13% (or 70 bcm) drop in 2022 with a necessary demand adjustment to balance both the European and global gas markets.
  • All sectors contributed to the declines but the reduction 2023 was largely driven by the power sector, amid a lower call on gas-fired power plants due to expanding renewables and improving nuclear availability.
  • Mild winter weather and gas-saving efforts continued to weigh on gas use in the residential and commercial sectors.
  • industry saw a gradual recovery in H2 2023 boosted by lower prices including in the more gas-intensive industrial sectors after showing the steepest decline in 2022.
