EU Gas Storage Withdrawals Drop Back Below Normal

Average European gas storage withdrawals in the week to Dec 11 were roughly in line with the seasonal normal as strong withdrawals in the first week of December have reduced this week as demand has fallen with milder weather in Europe.

  • Withdrawals were down to just over 3,600GWh/d on Dec 11 from a high of nearly 6,750GWh/d on Dec 4 and compared to the 2018-2022 average for the period of 4,869GWh/d.
  • Above normal temperatures are still forecast for NW and central Europe throughout December.
  • European natural gas storage was down just below the top of the previous five year range to 90.43% full on Dec 11 according to GIE data compared to the seasonal five year average of 80.1%.
  • Storage in Germany is down to 233.8TWh (91.7% full), Italy to 175.6TWh (89.15%), Netherlands to 125.0TWh (87.7%), France to 120.5TWh (89.7%) and Austria to 91.2TWh (93.4%).
