EU Heads Of Mission Pen Letter Hinting At Improve Relations w/UK Gov't

EU-UK

The heads of mission/high commissioners of the 27 EU member states to the United Kingdom have attached their names to a joint letter both talking up the recent improvement in EU-UK relations and hinting at further collaboration in the future. The letter, published in The Guardian on the occasion of the EU's 'Europe Day' celebrations, and continues the recent trend of EU and UK officials talking up relations.

  • A week ago,Bloomberg reported that the UK and EU were closing in on a deal on financial services, stating "People familiar with EU thinking said the text of the document was likely to be presented to national experts from member states next week. It would be handed to the UK once signed in about a month’s time. UK government and regulatory officials close to the process suggested that a final agreement could be reached by June."
  • Simon Usherwood, chair of the UK in a Changing Europe think tank: "While not unprecedented, it's unusual for such a letter to be written: treat it as a demonstration of collective intent and openness...The content isn't really anything new. [...] The key bit is this: "Rediscovery of common interests and concerns have led to the Windsor framework and to a much welcome and necessary regain in trust in EU-UK relations. The task ahead is therefore to build on this re-engagement." Windsor is thus both an end in itself, but also a means to further ends."
