EU Mins-Bosnia Should Get Candidate Status; Membership Still Some Way Off

Austrian European Affairs Minister Karoline Edtstadler says EU ministers have recommended that the western Balkan nation of Bosnia and Herzegovina is given official EU candidate status, a recommendation set to be signed off on by member state leaders at this Thursday's EUCO summit.

  • Should be noted that candidate status does not guarantee swift entry to the bloc. Indeed, Montenegro was granted candidate status in 2010 and remains in the process of negotiating its entry, with only three of the 33 applicable 'negotiating chapters' agreed to and closed off.
  • B&H's complex governing system, involving the country's Serb, Croat, and Bosniak communities, combined with the low probability-high risk scenario of a breakaway of the ethnic Serb Republika Srpska is likely to significantly delay the country's EU accession.
