EU Natgas Demand Fell 10.6% YoY in February

EU natural gas consumption in February stood 10.6% below 2023 levels, according to Eurostat data, after temperatures reached highest on record according to Argus.

  • Consumption was down in all five of the largest consumers — Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy and France — most significantly in Spain, by more than 16% on the year.
  • Industrial gas demand averaged 2.77TWh/d across Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy, Argus estimates showed. This is down from 2.86TWh in 2023 and down from 3.59TWh in February 2021.
  • Average European temperatures in February were the highest on record at 3.3°C above the 1991-2020 average, according to EU earth-monitoring programme Copernicus.
  • Total European natgas demand in January-February stood only 0.15% below last year’s levels after January gas demand surged to a two-year high.
  • EU demand was 17.4% below the 2017-22 average during April 2023 and February 2024, surpassing the EU’s voluntary reduction target of 15%.
