EU Power Demand Down 7% This Year ahead of Winter Rise

ELECTRICITY

European electricity demand has been depressed by on average 7% so far in 2023 compared with the 2017-2021 historical demand levels according to ICIS.

  • Demand has been relatively uniformly suppressed at the sectoral level with industrial, residential and commercial sector demand lagging behind the historical averages.
  • Lower demand due to the sharp spike in both power and gas prices last year is still filtering through the system with prices still considerably higher than pre-crisis levels despite the decline this year.
  • The coming months will be crucial in providing an indication about the future with demand historical ramping up into winter after the flat levels in August and September.
