EU Set to Roll Over Existing Russia Sanctions at 16-17 Dec Summit

  • Final EU summit for 2021 (16-17 Dec) to see leaders extend current sanctions on Russia for another six months, which are tied to the Minsk agreements to resolve the crisis in Ukraine.
    • Brussels is not discussing the introduction of new sanctions for the time being according to an EU source. Existing sanctions expire on 31 Dec and the EU has said it is willing to expand sanctions, should Russia invade Ukraine
  • NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg welcomes the dialogue between Putin & Biden, and expressed the hope that Russia will respect the territorial integrity of Ukraine – calling for a reduction in tensions and transparency RE its intentions with Ukraine. –
