EU US Energy Council Meeting Looks To Future Proof EU Energy

The EU-US Energy Council meets today in Washington amidst Ukraine fears to '...move forward our ongoing work to ensure world energy markets are stable and well-supplied.’

  • The council has limited options for dealing with present disruption but the crisis has exposed flaws in Europe’s energy security architecture and prompted focus on building preventative measures into Europe’s energy security framework.
  • Paul Bledsoe strategic adviser at PEPI: ‘The council's immediate task is to line up additional natural gas and other electricity supplies in case Russian gas is cut off.’
  • This will include increased supply from Qatar, Algeria, and Azerbaijan and development of LNG facilities to receive shipments from the US and Australia.
  • One potential option is to fast track Canadian LNG facilities. Canada has 73 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of proven natural gas reserves but will not have the LNG terminals to export LNG until 2025.
