Europe and Turkey LNG Imports Fall 4.9% in Jan

LNG

LNG imports into Europe and Turkey were 4.9% down month on month from 15.8bcm to 15bcm in January according to preliminary Kpler data.

  • December has seen the fifth highest monthly imports on record, but Jan imports were limited by strong pipeline supply from Norway and high gas storage.
  • January LNG imports were still the biggest source of supply despite a year on year decline of nearly 7% year on year compared to 10.8bcm of pipeline supply from Norway.
  • More than 55% of the Europe and Turkey LNG imports originated from the US compared to 50% in December and an average of 45% in 2023. The next biggest suppliers were Russia, Algeria, and Qatar.
  • Ship tracking showed 80 arrivals into NW Europe in Jan compared to 74 in Dec according to Bloomberg. Russian net imports into western Europe rose to the highest since March 2022 driven by arrivals in to France and Spain.
  • European LNG sendout was at 353mcm/d on Jan 31 according to Bloomberg with supplies holding below the average levels seen in Jan. LNG imports are below levels seen in 2022 and 2023 but remain well above the 2015-2021 average.
