European Commission to Review Construction of Additional Paks Plant Blocks

HUNGARY
  • The Russia-financed construction of two new nuclear reactors at Hungary's Paks power plant could be blocked by the European Commission, who are seen reviewing the license due to Budapest potentially extending the pre-approved lifespan of the existing reactor blocks. The project dates back to 2014, where the Hungarian government commissioned Russia's Rosatom to build two new reactors costing EUR12.5bln, largely financed via a EUR 10bln loan from Moscow. The plant currently provides half of Hungary's electricity production.
  • Blockades and sanctions are "futile in terms of meeting their own goals", while they will "cause difficulties to people who have nothing to do with the causes", Foreign Minister Szijjarto said in Havana yesterday according to MTI.
  • There are no major economic releases or speakers scheduled today, though the government will announce results of a government debt auction at 1030 GMT/1130 local time. Hungary plans to sell HUF35b, including HUF8b of ‘51 green bonds.
