FDP Hit Highest Polling Score Since 2009 As Party Joins Coalition Talks

GERMANY

Latest polling from INSA and Forsa shows the pro-business liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP) on 15% support, the highest level of public support recorded in a poll for the party since 2009. The boost for the FDP comes as the party votes in favour of officially starting coalition talks between them, the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) and environmentalist Greens.

  • Forsa poll: SPD: 26%, CDU/CSU: 20%, GRÜNE: 16%, FDP: 15% (+1), AfD: 9%, LINKE: 5%. +/- vs. 5-11 Oct. Fieldwork: 12-18 October 2021 Sample size: 2,502
  • INSA poll: SPD: 28%, CDU/CSU: 18.5% (-0.5), GRÜNE: 16%, FDP: 15% (+2), AfD: 11.5 (+0.5)%, LINKE: 5% (+1). +/- vs. 11-15 Oct. Fieldwork: 15-18 October 2021 Sample size: 2,140
  • The FDP was the last of the 'traffic light' coalition parties to approve talks. The parties can now begin work on the laborious process of divvying up ministerial offices and agreeing on policy platforms.
  • For the FDP, which historically has adopted a socially liberal, pro-EU worldview whilst supporting a smaller state with lower taxation, the Finance Ministry will be the main prize for leader Christian Lindner in coalition talks.
