Eurozone economic activity expanded at its weakest pace since the start of 2017
in March, as rates of growth in both the manufacturing and services sector
tapered. The slowing reflected a combination of slower new order growth,
disruption caused by bad weather conditions and supply chain constraints
resulting following recent strong growth. Manufacturing production rose to the
lowest extent since November 2016, whereas service sector business activity
increased at the weakest pace since August last year. Each of the 'big-four'
nations and Ireland all saw moderations during the latest survey month. Hiring
intentions moderated but remained positive for the 41st straight month while
price pressures eased to a three-month low. Eurozone service sector output
expanded at the slowest pace in seven months and while 2018 Q1 was the best
quarterly outturn in seven years, momentum in the sector since the turn of the
year seems to have lost some steam.
