Finance Minister To Discuss His Austerity Measures With Municipal Heads

  • Finance Minister Zbynek Stanjura will discuss possible amendments to the government's fiscal consolidation package with municipal and regional authorities. Their meeting was scheduled to begin at 08:00BST/09:00CEST. Municipalities are pushing for keeping the current form of the property tax, while the national government proposed that it should participate in the distribution of property tax revenue.
  • Former ICC Vice-President Robert Fremr withdrew his candidacy for a constitutional judge. President Petr Pavel held off on his appointment despite an approval from the Senate after Fremr's record as a judge in the communist Czechoslovakia came under scrutiny. Fremr said that public perceptions of his past record could have undermined the credibility of the Constitutional Court.
  • President Pavel has already appointed five constitutional judges, with two more left until the end of this year, after a failure to finalise Robert Fremr's appointment. Seznam Zpravy reported that one of the candidates being considered is Jiri Priban, who currently teaches at Cardiff University.
