Finance Minister Warns Against Complacency in Fight Against Inflation

  • Hungary's GKI economic sentiment rose to -10.8 in January from a revised -13.1 in December, according to the GKI Economic Research. That is its highest level since July 2022. Business confidence fell to -8 from -6.9, while consumer confidence rose to -19 from a revised -30.7.
  • Speaking in an interview to Vilaggazdasag newspaper over the weekend, Finance Minister Varga warned against complacency as inflation declines. “A slight global market swing or other imbalance may still push Hungarian inflation to unpleasant heights,” the minister said. The comments contradict those from Prime Minister Orban on Friday, who said the rate of inflation resurging was “minimal” and called for the central bank to help growth by lowering interest rates.
  • Foreign Minister Szijjarto will attend an EU meeting focused on longer-term security commitments and military support to Ukraine. There are no major data releases on the docket today, with average wage and unemployment rate data the highlights later in the week.
