Finland, Estonia Confirm Leak on Baltic Interconnector

The operator of an undersea gas pipeline connecting Finland and Estonia confirmed initial suspicions that a leak had occurred, which shut off the interconnector on Sunday early morning, Kalle Kilk, CEO of Estonian network operator Elering.

  • The leak in the Baltic Sea pipeline lasted several hours before coming to a stop, Kilk said.
  • The Estonian navy began surveying the pipeline with its equipment Monday evening according to ERR. The Finnish Security and Intelligence Service is also involved in the investigation, according to YLE.
  • The inspection will be carried out in stages this week, Gasgrid said on Tuesday.
