First LNG Tanker Transits Northern Sea Route

The first LNG tanker that has traversed the Northern Sea Route this summer has reached its destination at Yanai in Japan according to ICIS vessel tracking.

  • The Fedor Litke left the Arctic Yamal plant on 5 June and arrived at Yanai on 28 June.
  • The cargo may be a spot sale to Chugoku Electric, the main user of the Yanai terminal according to ICIS.
  • Travelling via the Northern Sea Route can cut the journey time to Asia in half compared with going west around Europe then back east through the Med and the Suez Canal to reach Asia.
