FM Sturgeon Expected To Announce Stricter COVID Restrictions

In the coming minutes, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is due to deliver a statement on the COVID-19 situation in Scotland. She is due to speak just after 1400GMT.

  • Widespread expectation is that Sturgeon will go further than the UK gov't in limiting household mixing to three separate households over the Christmas period. Unclear whether this will come as recommended guidance or an enforcable mandate as has been the case during other COVID-19 lockdowns.

  • UK gov't has been keen to say that it will not introduce restrictions over Christmas. However, once the holiday has passed there remains the notable prospect of some kind or ratcheting up of restrictions in England (the only constituent UK nation where the gov't in Westminster sets the COVID-19 rules).
