UK DATA: Footfall Ticks Up As Retailers Began To Reopen
---------------------------------------------------------------
- May BRC-Shoppertrak Footfall -81.6% Y/Y (Mar -84.7%)
- Retail park footfall saw largest improvement
----------------------------------------------------------------
Footfall continued to decline sharply in May, although at a slower pace than in
April. Footfall was down -81.6%, slightly better than April's. Retail parks saw
the largest gains, rising from -62.4% in Apr to -55.0% in May, due to the
reopening of some shops such as garden centres and homeware shops. However,
footfall on high streets still fell by 77.8%, following a decrease of 81.8% in
Apr. Again, shopping centres saw the largest drop in footfall, falling by 84.9%.
The survey noted that other countries experienced a rise in footfall by around
15-25% in the initial weeks after lifting their lockdown and UK retailers hope
for a similar result.
