MEXICO: Foreign Min Call w/Rubio Will Be Starting Point For US-Mexico Talks

MEXICO

President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed that her Minister of Foreign Affairs Juan Ramón de la Fuente held talks with the new US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on 21 Jan. She says that the two discussed migration and security, two of the major issues new US President Donald Trump has raised in relation to the declaration of an emergency on the border.

  • Shienbaum described the call as 'good' and 'very cordial', saying that the discussion would be the starting point for talks between the gov'ts of both countries.
  • Despite the cordial call, Trump has made clear the prospect of 25% tariffs being implemented on Mexican goods as soon as 1 Feb amid accusations the Mexican gov't is allowing drugs and undocumented migrants to cross the border en masse.
