Wires carrying comments from South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor, stating that "It is a very troubling moment for the government and the governing party".
- Comments come after a parliamentary report found that President Cyril Ramaphosa may have a case to answer in whether he violated his oath of office in relation to the 'Phala Phala' case, where large sums of cash were allegedly stolen from a farm owned by Ramaphosa in 2020.
- Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has called on Ramaphosa to resign. Dlamini-Zuma, the ex-wife of former President Jacob Zuma, is seen as a presidential contender for the ANC in her own right.
- Should Dlamini-Zuma and other senior Cabinet ministers resign in protest it could put unsustainable pressure on Ramaphosa to step down, risking a significant factional war within the ANC.
- Next general election is not due to take place until May 2024.
