Foreign Producers in Kurdistan Dispute Production Costs with Iraq

Iraqi PM Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani said Tuesday that foreign oil companies operating in the Kurdish region had informed him they can resume production within a month if an agreement is reached on oil production costs and contracts. This comes on top of issues between Turkey and Iraq closing a key pipeline since March.

  • "Foreign companies operating in the Kurdistan region believe that the production costs that were determined by the Iraqi side are low and not commensurate with the production costs from the region’s fields," he said, indicating Iraq may also have issues to overcome with the producers in Kurdistan as well as resuming pipeline flows.
  • Turkey's energy minister said earlier this month that the pipeline is prepared for shipments to begin but Iraqi officials said Iraqi officials said they had not received notice adding contract measures still needed negotiating.
