Former PM Johnson-I Will Find It Difficult To Vote For Windsor Framework

UK

Speaking at Brand Finance’s Global Soft Power Summit in London, former PM Boris Johnson speaks on the Northern Ireland protocol and the 'Windsor Framework' announced earlier this week by PM Rishi Sunak and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

  • Johnson says that "I'm gonna find it very difficult to vote for something like this myself because I believed that we should have done something different. No matter how much plaster came off the ceiling in Brussels"
  • Does not agree with Sunak's claim the framework takes back control, saying 'This is the EU graciously unbending to allow us to do what they want in our own country not by our laws but they by theirs."
  • Johnson: ""I hope that it will work. But if it doesn't work, we will have the guts to deploy [the Northern Ireland protocol] bill again. [...] I will continue to campaign because this is nothing if it is not a Brexit government. Brexit is nothing if we in this country don't do things differently""
Notably, Johnson does not say that he will vote against the framework, just that he will find it difficult to do so. Observers have been watching Johnson for signs of whether the band of Conservative MPs still loyal to him will seek to derail the framework. The lack of enthusiasm from Johnson would hit at a reluctant acceptance, rather than an outright rebellion.
