Former Pres. Zuma Sentenced To 15 Months In Prison

South Africa's highest court has sentenced former President Jacob Zuma to 15 months in prison for contempt of court in an unprecedented action in the African nation.

  • Zuma was convicted of contempt of court after failing to appear before a judicial panel investigating alleged corruption in gov't during his time in power.
  • As the sentence has been handed down by the Constitutional Court - the highest court in the land - there is no route of appeal for Zuma. The only way to avoid a spell incarcerated would be for Zuma to be pardoned by incumbent President Cyril Ramaphosa.
  • The actions of Ramaphosa in rooting out corruption within gov't and the governing ANC party have seen him garner broad public support, but risk the splintering of his party.
