Former VP Pence Officially Launches Presidential Bid

US

Former Vice President Mike Pence has officially launched his campaign for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, releasing a videosaying that 'different times call for different leadership'. Pence is viewed as a long-shot for the GOP nomination given the overwhelming presence of former President Donald Trump in the run-up to the primary race getting underway in early 2024.

  • Pence, a former Congressman and Governor of Indiana, could prove able to draw support from the Republican party's significant base of evangelical Christian voters. Galvinising the votes of this cohort has proved crucial for GOP hopefuls in previous elections.
  • Political betting markets show Pence as a distant prospect to win the nomination. Data from Smarkets gives him a 2.0% implied probability of becoming the Republican Party's presidential candidate, trailing frontrunner Donald Trump on 66.7% implied probability.
