French Diplomatic Sources - Xi Ready To Call President Zelensky

CHINA-EU

Reuters reporting comments on the war in Ukraine from the meeting between French President Emmanuel Macron and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

  • According to French diplomatic sources quoted by Reuters, "Macron urged Xi not to provide arms to Russia, Xi said it was not his war."
  • The sources say, "China was to work with France towards dialogue and durable peace in Ukraine," adding that "Xi is ready to call Ukraine's Zelensky, will choose his moment."
  • Xi's reluctance to engage directly with Zelensky has contributed to sceptism in the West that Beijing can operate as a credible mediator in the war. The Wall Street Journal reported that Xi and Zelensky would hold a call shortly after Xi's high-profile visit to Moscow in late March but Kyiv maintains that Beijing has rejected offers of contact.
  • The lack of dialogue with Kyiv and the omission, in China's 'position paper' for resolving the war, of calls for Russian troops to leave Ukrainian territory in the event of ceasefire have led Western officials have openly question Beijing's assertion that they are a neutral party to the conflict.
