French EU Min Speaks w/ UK's Frost On Fisheries

EU-UK

French Europe Minister Clement Beaune tweets: "This morning, I spoke again with [UK Cabinet Office Minister Lord] Frost. France remains open to dialogue, but a quick solution must be found for our fishermen, in accordance with our agreements."

  • London and Paris continue to blame one another for the fisheries spat. The bone of contention is the granting of licenses to French fishermen seeking to operate in UK waters. France argues the UK is not providing enough licenses, and it taking too much time to process applications. The UK states that it is acting in accordance with the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement and that in leaving the EU it has the right to permit or deny access to foreign vessels to its waters.
  • Comes as Frost prepares for meeting at the end of the week with European Commission VP Maros Sefcovic to discuss the Northern Ireland protocol and the seemingly-imminent triggering of Article 16 by the UK gov't that would suspend the protocol and risks a major EU backlash.
