Further Venezuelan Opposition Arrests Complicate Sanctions Relief Extension

Two people close to the Venezuela’s opposition candidate Maria Corina Machado were arrested this week, further complicating a narrowing chance of US energy sanctions being extended from April.

  • Machado won the opposition's October nominating contest by a landslide, but is barred from registering her candidacy and running against Nicholas Maduro in the July presidential contest.
  • Machado has been polling far ahead of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro according to Reuters reports.
  • The US has already warned that energy sanctions relief will be allowed to expire April 18 if the socialist government of Maduro does not allow free and fair elections.
  • A Washington official said this week the US is still holding out for progress, but Caracas had been sending "negative signals."
