US

Former Mayor of Los Angeles Eric Garcetti is expected to be confirmed as the US Ambassador to India after the Senate advanced Garcetti's nomination, in a 52-42 cloture vote, ending a period of 20 months without an Ambassador in New Delhi. A final vote will take place around 19:00 ET 23:00 GMT.

  • Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) said, following the procedural vote: “The United States-India relationship is extremely important, and it’s a very good thing we now have an ambassador.”
  • Senator Todd Young (R-IN): “It’s in our national security interest to have an ambassador immediately in place in India in order to balance China, work with the U.S. throughout the Indo-Pacific. He has an imperfect resume, but the skills to succeed in this capacity.”
  • AP: "The vacancy in the ambassadorship has left a significant diplomatic gap for the administration at a time of rising global tensions, including China’s increasingly assertive presence in the Pacific region and Russia’s war with Ukraine."
  • The absence of an ambassador has been seen as an obstacle to delicate negotiations with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government on India's relationship with Russia.
