German Chancellor Announces Support For Ukraine EU Candidacy

UKRAINE

Hans von der Burchard at Politico tweets: "German Chancellor Olaf Scholz supports granting Ukraine and Moldova EU membership candidate status. "Germany supports a positive decision for Ukraine and also Moldova" by EU leaders, the chancellor said at press conference in Kyiv."

  • States that 'Ukraine is part of the European family''. Scholz's support adds to that of French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian PM Mario Draghi.
  • The European Commission is set to confirm its support for offering Ukraine official candidate status. Should be noted that there is a long path between gaining candidate status and acceding to full EU membership.
  • Nevertheless, Ukraine's potential fast-track to EU membership likely to cause some notable concern in Moscow. Focus on keeping Ukraine out of NATO does not seem to have extended to keeping it out of the EU.
