German Gas Imports Down 26.1% Jan-Aug y-o-y

German natural gas import costs leapt 189% in the first eight months of 2022 from a year earlier according to BAFA data.

  • Overall imports were down by 26.1% over that period.
  • Pipeline gas from Norway, the Netherlands, Britain and Denmark as well as higher LNG imports have stepped in to replace some of the Russian flows.
  • BAFA's statistics, which are published with a two-month delay, showed January-August coal imports at 2,554,066 TJ, compared with 3,458,434 TJ a year earlier.
