POWER: German Solar Capacity Surpases 100GW

POWER

Germany’s solar capacity surpassed 100GW at the turn of 2024. However, industry leaders warn that achieving the future target of 215GW by 2030 will require stronger political support and regulatory reforms to sustain growth, German Solar Industry Association said today.

  • In 2024, one million photovoltaic systems added 17GW of peak output, a 10% rise from 2023's 15.4GW.
  • Ground-level solar parks saw a 40% year-on-year growth, contributing 6.3GW of new capacity.
  • Commercial rooftop systems experienced an estimated 25% growth, adding 3.6GW, including pending registrations.
  • Plug-in solar devices, known as "balcony power plants," doubled their capacity, reaching an additional 0.4GW.
  • In contrast, private home rooftop systems saw a 15% decline in new installations, totalling 6.7GW, a drop linked to falling solar module prices that posed challenges for many solar companies.
  • The German Solar Industry Association is advocating for a comprehensive 10-point policy plan to drive solar energy growth.
  • And emphasise the need for supportive measures to sustain the viability of solar construction and energy storage, alongside the urgent removal of market barriers to preserve momentum in the energy transition.
