German VC-We Should Not Stand In Way If Poland Sends Kyiv German Tanks

German Economy Minister and Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck has stated that the German gov't should not stand in the way if the Polish gov't seeks to send German-made Leopard-2 battle tanks to Ukraine. Habeck: “Germany should not stand in the way of other countries taking decisions to support Ukraine, independent of which decisions Germany takes,”

  • The issue of sending main battle tanks to Ukraine for use by the country's armed forces in its war against Russia has been one of delicacy for Kyiv's main allies. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has talked up the need for 300 battle tanks as essential to win back territory occupied by Russia.
  • While the UK has shown an inclination to send around 10 Challenger 2 main battle tanks to Ukraine, so far Germany, France and the US have only committed to sending armoured fighting vehicles. These are more lightly armoured and carry lower calibre weapons than main battle tanks.
  • Actions of UK and Poland seen as attempts to encourage Germany to both allow the re-export of its Leopard 2 tanks currently deployed by other European nations as well as sending some tanks of its own.
