German Weekly Gas Demand Lags 2018-21 Average by 37%

German natural gas consumption last week stood 37% below the 2018-2021 average, largely driven by lower demand from households and small businesses, Bnetza data showed.

  • German natural gas demand from households and small businesses increased week on week to 364GWh/d, up by 72GWh/d, but consumption continues to lag 2022 levels by 40.7%.
  • Gas use from the industrial sector rose on the week to 1.074TWh/d, compared with 1.068TWh/d the week prior. Industrial gas demand surpassed 2022 levels by 5.1% but continued to lag the 2018-21 average.
  • German gas storage stood at 97.35% of capacity as of 10 October, up from 96.56% a week earlier.
