POWER: Germany May Extend Coal Reserve on Delayed Gas Buildout

POWER

Germany may need to keep its mothballed coal power plants available for longer due to the delayed buildout of new gas power plants, TSO Amprion said, cited by Bloomberg.

  • “Some of these plants currently only have an operating perspective until 2026, the vast majority until 2031,” Amrpion’s CEO Christopf Mueller said.
  • “We should do a proper analysis now in case we need these power plants for longer”, Mueller added.
  • “But if we only tell the operators in 2030 that they will be needed until 2035, it will definitely be more expensive, if longer operation is still possible at all”, Mueller warned.
  • The collapse of the German coalition government in November 2024 caused the long-delayed power plant strategy to be further delayed.
  • Germany’s power plant strategy aims to add 12.5GW of power plant capacity and 500MW of long-term storage capacity, including 10GW hydrogen-ready gas-fired capacity.
