GERMANY: Party Heads Near Deal On Early February Election

GERMANY

German politicians are nearing an agreement that would set the stage for an early federal election in February 2025. This would come as something of a compromise. Chancellor Olaf Scholz had initially laid out plans for a confidence vote in January that would lead to a March election. Meanwhile, leader of the main opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Friedrich Merz had called for an immediate confidence vote that could have resulted in an election in January.

  • CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann said an agreement was likely "in the next few hours," adding on the date (16/23 Feb seen as likely) "it will probably be a compromise."
  • The Free Democrats of erstwhile Finance Minister Christian Lindner confirmed they would not back any gov't business in the Bundestag until an acceptable path to the election is laid out. Parliamentary Secretary of the FDP parliamentary group Johannes Vogel said that . "The FDP will not simply allow the remaining coalition's plans to be put on the agenda before it is clear that there will be quick new elections. The Union sees it the same way."
