Global COVID-19 Tracker – Sep 1

by Tom Lake

COVID-19 Trends

  • The number of fatalities attributed to COVID-19 reached 850,000 worldwide on August 31. The rate of increase in fatalities has continued to slow, standing at 0.5% on August 31, down from an average of 0.9% per day at the same point in July. The nominal increase in fatalities is also slowing, with the 3,900 increase on August 30 the lowest 24 hour tally since July 13.
  • The United States recorded its lowest number of new cases since June 22 on August 31, with 33,888 added to the total. Despite this slowdown in case growth, the US still recorded the second-highest number of new cases globally in the past week, exceeded only by India. This follows on from the US' lowest daily fatality count since July 5 on August 30, with 309 fatalities on that day due to COVID-19. It should be noted, though, that new fatality counts as well as new cases are often lower on Mondays than other days of the week.
  • Israel recorded its highest number of new coronavirus cases on August 31, with 2,576 added to the tally. The spike in cases in the country has seen Israel record the fourth-highest number of new cases per capita globally over the past seven days.
