Goldman Sachs Following Sheinbaum Candidacy Announcement

MEXICO
  • Goldman Sachs have highlighted that early polls show that Claudia Sheinbaum is the favourite to win the presidential election given President’s López Obrador long political coattails, charisma, and enduring high popularity after 5 years in office.
  • This is driven in part by a strong economy and labour market, generous transfers to targeted cohorts (elderly, youth, etc.), large increases in the minimum wage, and perceived anti-corruption stance (tempered by voters' increasing dissatisfaction with the security situation).
  • Additionally, the poor public image of the main opposition parties and many of their senior leaders in the eyes of many voters and Morena’s broad footprint at the local level are also expected to leverage Ms. Sheinbaum’s presidential bid and challenge Senator Gálvez.
  • But the presidential race may well turn competitive, and a strong showing by Senator Gálvez, a businesswoman of humble origins with an informal style and limited public office experience, could leverage the opposition in the legislative and local elections.
