GOP Leader McConnell's Health Could Imperil Critical Legislation

More questions have been raised about Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY)'s capacity to continue in his role after he experienced a second health incident in as many months yesterday.

  • Despite downplaying the severity of McConnel’s condition, it is unlikely his team can go much longer without revealing more substantive details about his health.
  • McConnell’s health will come into even sharper focus when the Senate returns from recess next week and confronts critical legislation to avoid a government shutdown.
  • McConnell has also acted as a crucial counterbalance to Ukraine-sceptic House Republicans. A role which will be important as the White House and Senate attempt to finesse the next major package of Ukraine aid in the coming weeks.
  • The National Review points out, “…it’s tough to see how much longer he can serve as the highest-ranking Republican in the Senate... This is especially true given that Republicans plan to make President Biden’s age and declining mental state a central part of their argument against him next year.”
  • McConnell isn’t up for re-election until 2026 and his team has indicated he plans to complete his term.
