Gordhan Comes Under Fire During ANC NEC Meeting, SARB To Release MPR

SOUTH AFRICA
  • ANC sources told the Mail & Guardian that the party's National Executive Committee (NEC) "poked holes" in Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gorhan's presentation on Monday before rejecting it. There were calls for Gorhan's dismissal amid widespread frustration among ANC executives, with President Cyril Ramaphosa coming to the minister's defence. According to a separate report circulated by EWN, the NEC wanted Gordhan to return and deliver a more detailed presentation on recent developments at public entities. Both media outlets noted that a majority in the NEC supported a suggestion to give Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa more powers at Eskom.
  • The Electricity Minister reiterated that the end of loadshedding is "in sight" as units of the Kusile power station are coming back online. An independent energy analyst told the Daily Maverick that Eskom's unplanned outages are the lowest they have been since November 2022.
  • The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) will release its Monetary Policy Review (MPR) at 15:30BST/16:30SAST. The report comes out twice a year - click here to see the April edition.
