Gov't Adds Russian 14 Individuals To Sanctions List, Inc. Media Figures

UK

The UK has added 14 more individuals to its sanctions list on Russia, with some of those added to the burgeoning list on 31 March coming from the media sector, as opposed to most of the others on the list who hail primarily from politics, the military, or business.

  • Alexey Nikolov (MD of RT), Sergey Brilev (news anchor and senior exec at Rossiya Television), and Anton Anisimov (editor-in-chief of Sputnik) have all been added to the sanctions list in a sign that the UK (and potentially other Western-aligned nations in the near future) will seek to target those disseminating Kremlin-approved news stories.
  • Each individual added to the sanctions list for, in the words of the UK gov't having "supported and promoted Russian military actions that destabilise Ukraine and undermine or threatens the territorial integrity, sovereignty or independence of Ukraine."
  • Could spark a Kremlin backlash against UK (and other Western) journalists present in Russia.
