Gov't Debates Appointment Of New Envoy To Russia, Ministers Submit Extra Spending Requests

CZECHIA
  • Lidove Noviny reported that the government is discussing the appointment of a new ambassador to Russia. The current envoy was recalled home and has not returned to Moscow after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Furthermore, his standard four-year term should have expired in 2022. President Petr Pavel had reportedly been sceptical about the need to send a new ambassador to Russia, but eventually agreed with the government that Czechia's diplomatic representation in Moscow should be at the same level as that of its allies. The Lidove Noviny article mentions that if Russia does not accept the new Czech envoy, it may face some form of diplomatic retaliation. It is expected that former Deputy Defence Minister Daniel Kostoval will be tapped to become the new ambassador.
  • The Cabinet will hold a meeting this morning, with the subsequent media briefing scheduled for 13:30GMT/14:30CET. Ministers are expected to discuss amendments to the laws on universities and the prevention of money laundering, as well as the aforementioned issue of appointing a new ambassador to Russia.
  • Denik N reported that meeting additional spending requests from various ministries would increase the budget deficit by almost a fifth (>CZK40bn vs. a deficit target of CZK252bn). While the ruling coalition has been trying to keep internal fiscal negotiations secret, the newspaper managed to obtain some details of the initial demands, which were included in special letters submitted by ministers a few days ago.
