Gov't Ends Eskom State Of Disaster With Immediate Effect

Wires report that the government confirmed lifting the national state of emergency declared in February to address the ongoing energy crisis with immediate effect.

  • TimesLive had flagged such possibility this morning, referring to a letter addressed to labour union Solidarity by South Africa's Attorney-General's office. The union subsequntly said that "the withdrawal of the state of emergency less than two months after it was instated indicates Solidarity was correct from the start in saying it was nothing but political theatre."
  • President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the implementation of a state of disaster during his State of the Nation Address on February 10 amid escalating power outages which have crippled the local economy. The measure was intended to allow the government to cut red tape in procuring electricity generation.
