Gov't Risks China Backlash With Plans For Taiwan Representative Office

SLOVENIA

The Slovenian gov't risks a diplomatic and economic backlash from Beijing following an announcement by the Taiwanese Foreign Ministry that Taipei was in talks with Ljubljana about the establishment of a representative office in Slovenia. There are risks that Slovenia could face diplomatic attacks and a disruption of trade with China following the announcement, as has been seen in Lithuania following its establishment of a Taiwan representative office.

  • Slovenian PM Janez Jansa criticised Beijing and praised Taiwan in an interview with Indian broadcaster Doordarshan on Monday, stating that “They [Taiwan] are a democratic country. It’s difficult to listen to a capital with a one-party system lecturing about democracy and peace around the world. You know, [Taiwan is] a country which is democratic and respects all international democratic standards, international law included.” Jansa added that it was 'a pity' that Beijing continues to block Taiwan's attempts to join the WHO.
