Gov't Reaches Deal w/ Rebel MPs Over UKIM Bill Amendment: BBC

BBC's Laura Kuenssberg tweets: "I understand a deal has been reached btw Tories who wanted to vote for Bob Neil's amendment to the controversial UKIM bill and the govt - it gives an extra layer of parliamentary oversight - ministers hope prevents rebellion next week. Wonder also if it might be enough to stop Lord Keen leaving govt after all? Have not seen text of the suggested changes yet and no official confirmation - but white smoke from the Commons after a lot of talks."

  • Lord Keen, the gov'ts Advocate General for Scotland, has offered his resignation to the PM earlier today over the UK Internal Market Bill. There has been notable focus on Justice Sec and Lord Chancellor Robert Buckland over whether he would resign over the bill, which the gov't acknowledges breaks international law.
  • While any Conservative backbench rebellion would likely prove too small to derail the bill or force an amendment, the gov't is clearly keen to present an image of party unity in the face of an onslaught of criticism from the opposition and the EU over the bill.
