Hamada To Take Over Defence Portfolio, Nishimura At Industry-Jiji

JAPAN

Jiji News reporting that according to senior administration sources, former defence minister Yasukazu Hamada is set to retake the position in tomorrow's expected Cabinet reshuffle, taking over from the ailing Nobuo Kishi. Hamada served as defence minister from 2008-09 under former PM Taro Aso.

  • The report also states that Yasutoshi Nishimura, who led the gov'ts response to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be given the Economy, Trade and Industry ministry.
  • Jiji: "Sanae Takaichi, the policy chief of the Liberal Democratic Party who shared a hawkish stance with slain former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, will become economic security minister while Taro Kono, currently the party's PR chief, will serve as digitalization minister"
  • Given the intensification of US-China tensions in the Pacific, the role of Japanese defence minister is likely to prove a crucial one in the months and years ahead. Hamada is not seen as a major factional player within the governing Liberal Democratic Party, having previously co-established the "Muhabatsu Renrakukai" (non-factional study group). In the 2021 leadership contest, Hamada backed conservative candidate Seiko Noda.
