Hamas-Biden Comments 'Misleading', Don't Represent Stance On Ceasefire

MIDEAST

Hamas has published a statement regarding the ongoing indirect talks on a ceasefire in Gaza. Says that US President Joe Biden's remarks on the ceasefire talks are 'misleading' and 'don't represent our stance on reaching a ceasefire'. Says that 'the recent ceasefire agreement presented to the group goes against what was agreed on 2 July', adding that Hamas 'showed flexibility' but that 'Netanyahu is still placing obstacles to achieving an agreement and new conditions in order to prolong the war.' Hamas: 'We call on the mediators to take responsibility and oblige Israel to implement what was agreed upon.'

  • With US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Egypt, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi says that 'It is time to put an end to the ongoing Gaza war'. Sisi warns of the conflict expanding regionally in a manner that is 'difficult to imagine'.
  • Al Jazeera reporting comments from Egypt’s former assistant foreign minister, Hussein Haridy, regarding the Blinken-Sisi talks: "[he] says questions over the status of Gaza’s Philadelphi Corridor and Rafah crossing are likely to feature prominently [...] said he expected discussions between Blinken and Egyptian officials today to be “quite frank” and that Cairo was unlikely to “budge” on its stance. “Egypt has always rejected the permanent Israeli military presence in the Philadelphi Corridor as well as Israeli control over Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing,” Haridy said. “This remains the Egyptian position.”
  • The Philadelphi corridor is the Israeli term for the 14km strip of land running the distance of the Egyptian Sinai-Gaza frontier.
