Hard-Left Candidate Castillo Leads In Run-Off Polling

PERU

Hard-left presidential candidate Pedro Castillo leads in early head-to-head opinion polls before the 6 June run-off election against right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori.

  • Ipsos: Presidential preference: Pedro Castillo (Free Peru): 42%, Keiko Fujimori (Popular Force): 31%, Don't Know/Blank: 29%. Fieldwork date: April 15-16, 2021. 1,204 respondents.
  • Ipsos: Which candidate will you definitely not vote for: Fujimori: 55%, Castillo 33%. Fieldwork date: April 15-16, 2021. 1,204 respondents.
  • Should polls continue in this vein it could spark notable market concerns about the prospect of a Castillo victory. While there is still a large pool of undecided voters, the significant proportion of respondents that said they would definitely not vote for Fujimori limits the potential pool of voters she can try to appeal to over the coming weeks.
  • Castillo's party has campaigned for widespread nationalisations of industry, rewriting the constitution inserting socialist language, and praised the attitudes towards press freedom of Lenin and Fidel Castro.
