Harris Makes Final Bid For Teamsters Endorsement

US

Vice President Kamala Harris will hold a roundtable meeting with Teamsters boss Sean O’Brien today to try to secure a late endorsement from the 1.3 million-member-strong union.

  • The Teamsters traditionally endorse the Democratic candidate at some point following the two party conventions, but O'Brien has oscillated between Democrats and Republicans, recognising that many rank-and-file union members hold a favourable view of former President Donald Trump.
  • Although a formal Teamsters endorsement is unlikely to sway a large vote share, an endorsement could be beneficial for Harris in Pennsylvania and Michigan - two key swing states where Harris appears to be struggling to match President Biden's popularity with blue-collar workers.
  • Politico notes: "An internal straw poll at the beginning of the summer showed that more than one-third of Teamsters members were planning to vote for Trump while about 45 percent were supporting Biden."
  • O'Brien said on September 5 when announcing the meeting: "We look forward to having a conversation on the direction of the country and the issues that matter to working people."
